Ed and Gaia have had the roughest relationship of any of the characters in the series because it has stretched from the beginning to the very end. In the beginning of the series, Ed first sees Gaia in front of her locker and immediately falls in love with her. He only gets up the nerve to tell her that he loves her in book 17, but it takes a while for Gaia to completely reciprocate the feelings.
When they start dating, things are going ok, but readers know in Gaia's life things don't stay normal for long. Ed gets shot at the morning after he and Gaia first sleep together and, knowing that it was a warning, Gaia leaves him right away and gives him the cold shoulder. She does this to protect him, but later she realizes that Ed still loves her and she still loves him, so she takes him back.
She is still together with Ed when Jake comes into the story and it takes several books until Sam "comes back from the dead" as well. When he does, Gaia lets him stay in an old maids quarters in Natasha's apartment. Tatiana eventually finds out and, although we aren't sure whether she did it on purpose or if she really was drunk, Tatiana lets it slip to Ed at a party that Sam is there. Ed finds him and Gaia (hugging good-bye because Gaia finally told him that she can't be with him because she loves Ed) and flips out. He leaves the party and doesn't talk to Gaia for a very long time.
Gaia still loves Ed and he still loves her, however. When Jake is killed, right before she leaves New York, Gaia says good-bye to Ed. They share a few final good-bye kisses and she runs off. For now, in the Fearless FBI series, that was the last time Gaia saw Ed and swore never to go back to New York because of all the horrible memories it holds.
