Fearless the Show

Fearless was almost made into a television show back in 2003. It was actually supposed to air, was pushed back a season, and then canceled before the first episode. The cast included Rachel Leigh Cook as Gaia Moore, Ian Somerhalder as Jordan Gray, Eric Balfour as Ryan, and Bianca Lawson as Harmony Kaye, as well as several other minor characters such as Erich Anderson as Gaia's godfather Frank and Judith Hoag as Gaia's godmother Nicky, and Gregory Itzin as the FBI's SAC (Special Agent in-Charge) Shankman.

From the executive producer of CSI and Without a Trace, this ensemble crime drama uncovers the FBI's best kept secret: the Y Unit. Society is breeding a new class of young criminals and it will take an elite division staffed with the finest young agents to infiltrate and apprehend them. The Y Unit requires a special kind of operative to succeed - much less survive. Born with a genetic defect, Gaia, 21, lacks the basic instinct her partners Ryan and Harmony must fight to control: fear. Whether Gaia's handicap is an important asset or a deadly liability for the unit remains to be seen.

After watching the first episode several times, I formed the opinion that this show would have gotten off to an excellent start. Whether it would have continued to progress remains to be seen because it never aired and never got the opinions of teenagers. The reason it was cancelled was because critics said that Rachel Leigh Cook displayed more 'emotionlessness' than 'fearlessness'. I think that displaying an emotion, or lack of an emotion rather, is difficult and if the critics bothered to read the books then they would have understood that the creators of the show did a decent job in capturing the essence of Gaia Moore's character. Do you think that they should have aired it? Watch the Pilot and share your opinion! Mail me at fearlessgoddess2@aol.com and I'll post your opinion at the bottom!

Understanding that I have NEVER read the books (and really, I didn't read Lord of the Rings until the movies came out, isn't that your 'target' audience???) I thought the pilot was GREAT! Of course she was guarded and toned down, she didn't want to open up! Wow, what a cast! I can't believe they didn't go with that! Ian and Rachel have real chemistry - as do Harmony and Rachel. I thought it was fabulous. Once again a great show gets the axe because of stupid producers (the same ones who cut Firefly, Star Trek, and a million other great shows).

I've read most of the "Fearless" books. (I know what you're all thinking. Francine Pascal?) They were really good. It'll be good to see in the show if the creators can bridge the gap from Gaia being 17 in the books, and 21 in the show. I wonder if they will bring The characters "Ed Fargo" and "Sam Moon" back. It also would be interesting to see them bring in "Heather Gannis", who was Gaia's rival in high school. One other thing was that in the books, Gaia was a blond. Unless Rachel Leigh Cook is going to dye her hair, it's a major difference. I heard that the WB was planning on picking the series up for it's Fall lineup. I think that would be a good thing. I just hope that the TV series is as good as the books.

At first I thought Rachel was all wrong to play Gaia. But then she surprised me and as long as she dyes her hair, I think she's perfect! I hope they bring the show back because I'm hooked to the books and I haven't read all of them. I think they should bring the same actors in as well, because there was chemistry.

Review from lozzapianist2005:

I think the the pilot was excellent, but didn't capture the character of Gaia in the right way. Rachel Leigh Cook is completely wrong for the part (she's petite and has the wrong coloured hair!) and she put a bit of a dampener on the whole thing. As a pilot of a potentially successful TV series, it had my vote, but as a show about Gaia? Nope. They need to reinvent the show to tell the stories of teenage Gaia; there are so many FBI-based shows these days, it would be fresh to see a teenager like Gaia in New York City - obviously her fearlessness would just make it more intriguing. If they were to re-launch this show, in my opinion, they ought to recast and tell the stories from the books. Someone like Evan Rachel Wood, Julia Stiles or one of the models from the covers could easily be a far better Gaia than Rachel Leigh Cook. They ought to cast Victor Browne (Clay from Charmed) as Sam and Curtis Andersen (Gordy from Sabrina, the Teenage Witch) as Ed. They would fit in my mind (but maybe I'm just strange). Lastly, I think casting lesser-known actors would really work; no preconceptions of anyone else, as such. Evan Rachel Wood would be an awesome Gaia, I think, as she can do very tortured and closed, as well as kick-ass and fearless. She's also young enough (at only nineteen) to be a seventeen-year-old Gaia successfully. All you'd have to do is put her in some beat up clothes and throw a messenger bag at her and she'd rock.
