Sam and Gaia had a rocky and complicated start, to say the least. Sam was originally with Heather, and stays with her for the first couple of books. From the first time they played chess in the park, though, they fall in love and Sam eventually breaks up with Heather and gets together with Gaia. While he was with Heather, though, Loki kidnapped him and used him against Gaia to test her. He lets him go and Heather takes credit for saving him.

When Sam and Gaia get together, Ella, Gaia's foster mother, seduced Sam when he got drunk at a bar, knowing that Gaia loved him, and slept with him. Sam knew it was a huge mistake, and regrets it, but nearly passes out when he meets Gaia's foster mother. She starts stalking him and eventually Gaia finds out what she did. When she is killed by the hit man that was meant for Gaia, Gaia and Sam talk a lot and he confesses everything that had happened.

When Sam is kidnapped by Yuri, and Gaia is told that he died, Gaia gets together with Ed and meets Jake. When Sam comes back, however, he is crushed to find out that Gaia has moved on. Sam is set up by Josh, his RA in college, to make it look like he has been plotting with Yuri against Gaia. Gaia believes the setup and accuses Sam of it. Ever since, Sam has never forgiven her. He did, however, tell her when Yuri called him so she, her father, her uncle, and Jake could find and arrest him.
